{"id":1904,"date":"2026-06-04T12:30:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T11:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/africanoystertrust.co.uk\/?page_id=1904"},"modified":"2026-06-27T12:15:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-27T11:15:48","slug":"jappineh-nursery-school","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/africanoystertrust.co.uk\/?page_id=1904","title":{"rendered":"Jappineh Nursery School"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jappineh Nursery School<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-995f960e wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jappineh Nursey School is situated in Jappineh, Jarra Central &#8211; one of the poorest districts in Gambia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> The village\u2019s first nursery was founded at the end of 2004 by a teenage volunteer who had only recently left school herself and was working with no equipment. Having started teaching the children underneath a tree, by November 2006 they had temporarily moved to an almost derelict room in a village compound which was far too small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Oyster Trust has worked with Kira Dalton and money from the Sir Howard Dalton Fund (a fund created following the untimely death of Kira\u2019s husband in 2007), to create brand new facilities in Jappineh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three classrooms have been completely renovated, furnished and equipped, and two more teachers have been recruited. Pupil numbers are now in excess of 100, and the community is delighted to, at last, have access to proper nursery education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Oyster Trust continues to support Jappineh Nursery School, including contributions towards teaching and food costs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/africanoystertrust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6137226_orig-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/africanoystertrust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6137226_orig-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/africanoystertrust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6137226_orig-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/africanoystertrust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6137226_orig-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/africanoystertrust.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6137226_orig.jpg 1066w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as being in a very poor region of Gambia, Jappineh is also remote and relatively inaccessible. This causes considerable problems with healthcare, so a new clinic has also been a major Trust project.
