Schools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From 2005 until 2022, we were directly involved in building and then supporting four nursery schools:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stepping Stones Nursery School<\/strong><\/a> in Kunkujang Keitaya; <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hilary Emery Nursery School<\/strong><\/a> in Talinding; <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mariama Mae Nursery School<\/strong><\/a> in Gunjur; and <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jappineh Nursery School<\/strong><\/a> in Jappineh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2018, we have been working closely with our sister British charity,\u00a0Gambia<\/strong>\u00a0School<\/strong>\u00a0Support<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>and in 2022 we handed over to them responsibility for these four nursery schools. Gambia School Support now have direct responsibility for supporting a total of 14 community schools located throughout The Gambia including the 4 mentioned above, which are delivering nursery education to over\u00a02,000 children every year. Each year we assess our financial reserves and commitments, and pass any surplus funds to the Gambia School\u00a0Support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In  2025, one of our doners requested that their donation be used to support the funding of a Gambia School Support project to refurbish the Madina Talokoto Nursery. You can read more about this project below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 2026, the trustees of Gambia School Support agreed to assist The Aisha Memorial School (AMS), Tujereng, another community school which was at risk of failing. Madina Talokoto Nursery<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In January 2025, the Madina Talokoto Nursery was a community school in distress. Today it is thriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a rural location, close to the southern border with Senegal. It\u2019s sponsor from Spain had died, there was no money, no water, teachers had left, pupil numbers had dropped to 41 (capacity 140), and the buildings were dilapidated and hazardous in places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An African Oyster Trust supporter donated \u00a310,000 towards the Gambia School Support restoration project costing a total of \u00a323,500. In just 6 weeks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • 4 classrooms were fully renovated (2 fitted with new roofs) and equipped;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • a new boundary wall, toilet block and kitchen (for daily porridge) had been constructed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • a new solar powered borehole was installed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Following completion of the project new qualified teachers were recruited and enrolment rose in 3 months from 41 to 95 pupils. Enrolment continues to rise and the school is expected to be at full capacity of 140 pupils by October 2025.\u200b <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
