You can read the background to their involvement with the Trust, plus the <a href=\"a-benefactors-diary.html\" title=\"\">first <\/a>and <a href=\"a-benefactors-diary-part-ii.html\" title=\"\">second <\/a>extracts from the diaries.<\/em><br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br><strong style=\"\">Friday 7th February<\/strong><br \/><\/br><\/div>\n<p>  <span class=\"imgPusher\" style=\"float:left;height:1px\"><\/span><span style=\"z-index:10;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:20px;*margin-top:40px\"><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Picture\" class=\"galleryImageBorder wsite-image\" src=\"uploads\/1776170648_4411.jpg\" style=\"margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; border-width:1px;padding:3px;\"><\/img><\/a><span class=\"wsite-caption\" style=\"display: block; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;\"><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;display:block;\">The first thing we spot as we arrive at the health centre is the ambulance.\u00c2\u00a0 Chalo, its driver, proudly demonstrates how everything works, stopping long enough to have his photo taken.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>Next we tour the very impressive clinic, meet the dedicated staff, visiting the laboratory, the wards and even the store cupboard!<br \/><\/br><\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;\"><\/hr>\n<p>  <span class=\"imgPusher\" style=\"float:left;height:52px\"><\/span><span style=\"z-index:10;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:20px;*margin-top:40px\"><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Picture\" class=\"galleryImageBorder wsite-image\" src=\"uploads\/1776170648_2847.jpg\" style=\"margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; border-width:1px;padding:3px;\"><\/img><\/a><span class=\"wsite-caption\" style=\"display: block; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;\"><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;display:block;\">It is now time for a special meeting, which we suspect is in our honour.\u00c2\u00a0 The Chief of Jarra Centre is in attendance, the village Mayor, Elders and Imams, all gathered to give thanks for the ambulance.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>Kira is thrilled that they are all here on time!\u00c2\u00a0 We know that there were huge celebrations at the time the ambulance was brought to the village in 2011, so it is very kind of them to hold this meeting.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>Through a translator, Fanding tells the story of the ambulance.\u00c2\u00a0 Then the Chief, an Imam and another Imam speak.\u00c2\u00a0 They are effusive in their thanks but also encourage us to extend our efforts!\u00c2\u00a0 Indeed, the second Imam has a curious request.\u00c2\u00a0 Mel whispers:\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Has he just requested a trolley for fat people?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 Yes he has.\u00c2\u00a0 An irony, perhaps, in a country where so many are hungry.\u00c2\u00a0 We are presented with ceremonial outfits and Certificates of Appreciation and we have the opportunity to present Chalo with a personal card and gift.<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;\"><\/hr>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">By now it is late morning and aware of my interest in psychiatry, Kira has arranged a visit to the nearby psychiatric unit.\u00c2\u00a0 She has told me that in the whole of Gambia there is only one fully trained psychiatric nurse, and not one psychiatrist!\u00c2\u00a0 So I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not a little wary of what we will find.<br \/><\/br><span style=\"\"><\/span><br \/><\/br><span style=\"\"><\/span>    We are met by the man in charge, who greets us warmly.\u00c2\u00a0 A \u00e2\u20ac\u02dctraditional\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 doctor, he is tall and flamboyantly dressed, sweeping ahead to show us several wards. In the last one a woman, psychotic when she was admitted following the birth of her baby, now lies quietly on the floor, shielding her face but eyeing us through her fingers.\u00c2\u00a0 Lying nearby, her baby is completely covered by a shawl to keep away mosquitoes.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <br \/><\/br><span style=\"\"><\/span><br \/><\/br><span style=\"\"><\/span>    The doctor then ushers us into his office and Kira and he discuss how they can work together in obtaining psychiatric medication, never an easy task in Gambia.\u00c2\u00a0 We learn afterwards that this is the first time the doctor has accepted the idea that his herbs do not help every condition.\u00c2\u00a0 Now he is actually asking for help.\u00c2\u00a0 We feel we have witnessed a significant breakthrough in what had seemed an intransigent situation.<br \/><\/br><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/div>\n<p>  <span class=\"imgPusher\" style=\"float:left;height:0px\"><\/span><span style=\"z-index:10;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px\"><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Picture\" class=\"galleryImageBorder wsite-image\" src=\"uploads\/1776170648_1412.jpg\" style=\"margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; border-width:1px;padding:3px;\"><\/img><\/a><span class=\"wsite-caption\" style=\"display: block; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;\"><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;display:block;\">Fanding has invited us for lunch at his compound and his wife, who we saw teaching at the school earlier, has come back to complete the preparations.\u00c2\u00a0 We eat in the customary way from one shared bowl and it is a delicious meal.\u00c2\u00a0<br \/><\/br><strong style=\"\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><br \/><\/br>Back at the health centre, a committee meeting is held outside, and we are invited to sit in.\u00c2\u00a0 Following prayers, the proceedings are translated, perhaps for our benefit rather than for Kira.\u00c2\u00a0 I suspect Kira understands rather more than she admits!\u00c2\u00a0 But how she manages when they all speak at once in Mandinka, I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<br \/><\/br><\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;\"><\/hr>\n<p>  <span class=\"imgPusher\" style=\"float:left;height:0px\"><\/span><span style=\"z-index:10;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px\"><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Picture\" class=\"galleryImageBorder wsite-image\" src=\"uploads\/1776170648_2079.jpg\" style=\"margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; border-width:1px;padding:3px;\"><\/img><\/a><span class=\"wsite-caption\" style=\"display: block; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;\"><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;display:block;\">As they move on to next year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s budget, the committee resort to further praying. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Afterwards, Kira states that although she is grateful for their prayers, they must remember that it is their own hard work which has enabled them to make the clinic successful, both medically and financially.\u00c2\u00a0 She says this in such a way that I feel mighty proud to be sitting next to her.<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>My mind wanders as the meeting continues and village ladies arrive for the celebrations to follow.\u00c2\u00a0 One or two come through the gate and sit on their water carriers (later used as drums), waiting patiently.\u00c2\u00a0 Outside, a group of young children play in the dust.<br \/><\/br><\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;\"><\/hr>\n<p>  <span class=\"imgPusher\" style=\"float:left;height:0px\"><\/span><span style=\"z-index:10;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px\"><a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Picture\" class=\"galleryImageBorder wsite-image\" src=\"uploads\/1776170648_3182.jpg\" style=\"margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; border-width:1px;padding:3px;\"><\/img><\/a><span class=\"wsite-caption\" style=\"display: block; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;\"><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;display:block;\">The celebrations underway, the women sing about village life, perhaps part of an oral history handed down through the generations.\u00c2\u00a0<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>Once there was no ambulance, they chant, and sick people travelled by donkey cart to hospital.\u00c2\u00a0 When the drumming reaches a crescendo, more women and children are inspired to perform short bursts of an exquisitely rhythmic pounding of the ground.<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>Fanding pulls me up and shows how to reward the ladies\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 efforts.\u00c2\u00a0 The game is to give them notes of small worth but lots of them, which they tuck into their costumes.\u00c2\u00a0 The money they raise will go towards village projects, such as the women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s garden, loudspeaker batteries, even pocket money for themselves.\u00c2\u00a0 I hope so.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>Mel is sitting next to the ambulance driver, Chalo, who has received some much deserved attention.
