Make a difference – from just £5 a month

The African Oyster Trust prides itself on the fact that virtually every penny donated by our supporters goes directly to its charitable work in The Gambia.

Everyone connected with the charity is a volunteer, so our administrative costs are virtually zero.

As a result, even the most modest one-off or monthly donations can go an awfully long way towards transforming the lives of our young nursery school pupils and their families in The Gambia.

By way of example, just £5 in 2025 can buy:

  • a uniform for nursery school
  • course of antibiotics for child
  • 10 tapalapa/French stick bread = breakfast for 20 children
  • ingredients + firewood to make porridge for 15 children
  • 50 pencils or 25 pens
  • a bundle of firewood sufficient to cook school lunches for 1 week for a school or 2 weeks for a family
  • 1 pair of school shoes
  • 4 pairs of flipflops
  • 10 packs of chalk for boards

And £10 in 2025 can buy:

  • a bag of cement which will make 34 building blocks for a new school project
  • one third of a month’s salary for trainee teacher
  • medical treatment for a serious illness- pneumonia, malaria etc.
  • mosquito nets for a whole family (2 or 3 nets)
  • a box of exercise books or pens for nursery class
  • school lunch ingredients (to go with rice) for 75 kids for one week
  • a clean water supply for a nursery school for one month – providing the mains power or petrol for generator to pump the water from a borehole

Every one-off donation or regular monthly payment, no matter how modest, really does make a huge difference to our work at nursery schools and health facilities in The Gambia, one of the world’s poorest nations.
